Learn about the different types of cisterns:

A cistern is a tank used for the transport of liquid, gaseous or solid materials. There are many types, but we will focus on the cisterns used for the transport of hazardous liquids. Cisterns are classified in three different ways:

  • According to the materials of which they are made: The materials used for their manufacture must be suitable for the different hazardous substances that exist. Therefore, the most commonly used materials for the manufacture of these tanks are stainless steel. They can be made of stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminium and plastic materials.
  • Depending on the number of tanks: If there are several tanks, they are most likely to be used for the transport of liquids. If it is a single tank, it is used for the transport of gases.
  • According to their thermal insulation system: This classification is subdivided in:
    • Without insulation
    • With insulation by coating
    • With insulation by vacuum enveloping chamber.

Types of cisterns:

Fixed cistern: A fixed cistern is a polyester tank with a capacity of more than 1,000 litres that is fixed to a vehicle or forms part of the vehicle chassis.
Demountable cistern: A cistern with a capacity greater than 450 litres and which is not designed for the carriage of goods without load breakage and which can normally only be handled when empty.
Cistern vehicle: Constructed to transport liquids or gases in bulk.
Portable tank: A multimodal cistern with a capacity of more than 450 litres used for the transport of liquids or gases.
Battery vehicle: A vehicle which links different elements together by a collecting pipe which is permanently mounted to that vehicle.
Hermetically sealed cistern: A tank intended primarily for the transport of liquids with a pressure of at least 4 bar, the openings of which are hermetically sealed.
Vacuum-operated waste tank: A fixed tank, demountable tank, tank container or tank swap body used for the transport of hazardous waste.
Tank container: Used for the transport of gaseous, liquid, powdery or granular materials. It has a capacity of more than 0.45 m3 (450 litres) when used for the transport of gases.
Multi-element gas container (MEGC): comprises elements which are connected to each other by a collecting pipe and mounted on a frame.
