The arrival of the cold months can present significant challenges to keeping the fleet up and running. One of the most critical aspects during the winter is ensuring that truck engines start efficiently and are kept in top condition. Here are some practical tips on how to achieve this and at the same time take proper care of them during this season.

⮞ Battery charging system:

  • Make sure batteries are fully charged before starting engines.
  • Consider installing battery warmers to ensure optimum performance.

⮞ Engine heaters:

  • Use block heaters or coolant heaters to keep the engine at a suitable temperature before starting.
  • Program the glow plugs to activate before the scheduled start time, allowing the engine to reach the ideal temperature.

⮞ Quality fuel:

  • Uses high quality fuels and anti-gel additives to prevent fuel crystals from forming.
  • Store trucks in places sheltered from the wind to prevent fuel freezing.

⮞ Suitable engine oil:

  • Use low viscosity engine oils that flow more easily in cold temperatures.
  • Perform oil changes according to the manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure optimum lubrication.

⮞ Starting system:

  • Check the correct functioning of the starting system, including glow plugs and preheaters, and replace defective parts immediately.
  • Keep electrical connections clean and in good condition.

How to take proper care of your vehicle’s engine in winter?

  • Allow the engine to warm up properly before subjecting it to heavy loads.
  • Avoid hard acceleration in the first few minutes of operation.
  • Schedule regular engine inspections to identify and address potential problems before they become serious.
  • Clean and check cooling systems to prevent overheating.
  • Make sure the cooling system contains the correct proportion of antifreeze.
  • Inspect and repair any leaks in the cooling system.
  • When trucks are not in use, store them in covered, wind-protected locations.
  • Disconnect the batteries if the trucks will be idle for extended periods of time.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your fleet is ready to face the challenges of winter, maintaining operational efficiency and prolonging the life of your valuable assets.
