Summer is a critical time for tanker truck maintenance. High temperatures can accelerate the wear and tear of certain parts, which can affect transport safety and efficiency. At Transportes Fernández y Aedo, we understand the importance of keeping our vehicles in optimal condition, especially during the hottest months. Below, we highlight three essential components that require special attention during the summer and provide recommendations on their maintenance and replacement.

1. Tyres

Tyres are critical to truck safety and performance. In summer, heat can increase internal pressure and accelerate tread wear.

– Common problems in summer:

  • Increased asphalt temperature, which can lead to increased wear.
  • Increased risk of punctures due to the expansion of air inside the tyre.

-Maintenance recommendations:

  • Regular inspection: Check tyre pressure and tyre condition at least once a week.
  • Tyre rotation: Rotate tyres every 10,000 to 12,000 kilometres to ensure even wear.
  • Replacement: Replace tyres when tread depth is below 3 mm or as recommended by the manufacturer.

2. Cooling system

The cooling system is crucial to keep the engine at the right temperature, preventing overheating.

– Common problems in summer:

  • Increased cooling demand due to high outside temperatures.
  • Risk of radiator and water pump failure.

-Maintenance recommendations:

  • Regular inspection: Check coolant levels and look for signs of leaks before each trip.
  • Radiator cleaning: Clean radiator and A/C condenser to prevent blockages, at least once a month.
  • Replacement: Change the coolant according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, usually every 60,000 kilometres or every two years, whichever comes first.

3. Battery

The battery is essential for starting the engine and operating the truck’s electrical systems.

– Common problems in summer:

  • High temperatures can accelerate evaporation of battery fluid, reducing battery life.
  • Increased energy demand due to frequent use of air conditioning.

-Maintenance recommendations:

  • Regular inspection: Check battery fluid levels and look for signs of corrosion on terminals every month.
  • Load testing: Perform load tests to ensure that the battery maintains an adequate charge.
  • Replacement: Batteries typically last 3-5 years. Replace according to condition and load tests.

Preventive maintenance in summer not only ensures the safety of drivers and cargo, but also improves efficiency and prolongs the service life of the tanker. Be sure to follow these recommendations and keep your truck in the best possible condition during the summer.
