In a sector as demanding and sensitive as chemical transportation, sustainability seems an unattainable challenge. However, at Fernández Aedo, we not only believe that it is possible, but we are demonstrating that concrete actions can be taken to mitigate the environmental impact of operations.
Today, we share with you an action in which we have taken a big step towards sustainability together with Bilbaotruck (Vulcanizados Retuerto SL), a key company in the maintenance and repair of our tanker fleet. Thanks to this collaboration, we have sponsored the planting of 60 trees in Galicia, which will reduce 88 tonnes of CO2 in the atmosphere over the next 35 years. This action is part of a comprehensive strategy that seeks to align our business efforts with environmental protection, and is just the beginning of a long-term commitment.
A project with real impact: Reforestation in Galicia
Our joint action with Bilbaotruck is more than just words; it is a tangible project that will have a significant impact on the environment. The planting of 60 trees is a small but powerful contribution to the fight against climate change. Moreover, this initiative is part of a wider project that, in the first eight months of 2024, has led to the planting of 5,715 trees in Galicia.
This reforestation effort not only focuses on CO2 capture, but also has a positive effect on local biodiversity and job creation in the region. We are pleased to highlight that this project respects gender parity, with a team of 50% women in charge of the care and monitoring of the trees. In this way, we reaffirm our commitment to sustainability, not only from an environmental point of view, but also from a social and economic perspective.
Reducing our carbon footprint
Transporting chemical liquids is an activity that inevitably generates carbon emissions. However, actions such as reforestation make it possible to offset and reduce this impact. The 60 trees planted by Fernández Aedo and Bilbaotruck will remove 88 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere over the next 35 years. To put it in perspective, this is like taking more than 20 vehicles off the road for a year.
