The freight transport industry in Spain is in the midst of an economic crisis triggered by the constant increase in fuel prices, which has been most significant in the last four months. This has resulted in a 20% increase in the price of diesel compared to June. This has caused haulage associations to express their concern for months.

Despite the difficult situation in the transport sector, the government approved a Decree-Law in June that gradually reduces fuel subsidies. This decrease implies a 50% reduction in subsidies from October, leaving them at just five cents per litre. This decrease contrasts significantly with an increase of more than 30 cents in the price of diesel over the same period.

The impact of this fuel crisis on the transport sector is immense, as road transport in Spain is responsible for 96% of the goods moved through the country. Transport associations consider it imperative to take immediate action to help hauliers maintain the viability of their businesses.

Some examples of support for the transport sector can be found in other European countries and at local level. Such is the case of Portugal, which has increased fuel subsidies in its territory, reaching 15 cents per litre for diesel and 16 cents for petrol.

On the other hand, the Government of the Canary Islands, as the only autonomous administration with power in fuel taxation, will maintain a 99% tax rebate for hauliers until 31 December. This recognises the importance of the transport sector in the regional and national economy.

However, it is essential that the Spanish Government also takes action to address this fuel crisis which threatens the economic stability of hauliers and affects the whole supply chain.

The fuel crisis in the Spanish freight transport sector is a pressing concern that requires immediate action by the Government. The economic viability of transport companies is at risk, and it is essential that action is taken to ensure that this sector continues to operate efficiently and without disruption. Road transport is a fundamental part of the Spanish economy and its stability is crucial to the country’s well-being.
