This summer’s heatwaves are breaking records in Europe, and with them the asphalt is reaching extreme temperatures, especially on long stretches of motorway or in industrial areas. For ADR tankers, the consequences of a blowout can be much more serious than for other types of transport.
The best thing to do? Prevention. Here are the keys that we at Fernández Aedo apply to keep our tyres in top condition.
5 keys to avoid blowouts this summer
1.Adequate pressure, checked when cold: High temperatures increase the tyre’s internal pressure. For this reason, tyres should always be checked when cold, never after driving, and at least once a week. Correct pressure prevents overheating and deformation.
2.Careful visual inspection: Look for cuts, bulges or irregular wear. A small cut can turn into a blowout at more than 80 km/h. At Fernandez Aedo we perform mandatory visual inspections before every trip.
3.Periodic rotation and alignment: In ADR tanks it is vital that wear is homogeneous. For this reason, we rotate every 10,000 km and check the alignment after every mechanical intervention or long journey.
4.Well-distributed load, never at the limit: A poor load distribution increases the thermal stress on the rear tyres. Furthermore, in ADR transport, overweight is not only a serious offence, but a direct risk to road safety.
5.Avoid long journeys at high speed: Long journeys with extreme outside temperatures and full loads require regular stops for servicing. And watch out for the brakes: a hot brake system also heats up the tyres, increasing the risk of failure.
At Fernández Aedo, we don’t play with safety, especially when transporting corrosive liquids or ADR products. With a proper inspection protocol, you can reduce the risk of bursts to practically zero.
