In 2024, a new truck regulation will be implemented that has two main objectives: to improve road safety and to reduce pollutant emissions. This regulation sets out a number of requirements that truck manufacturers must meet in order to be able to sell their vehicles.

Safety requirements of the truck regulation in 2024:

From July 2024, the General Safety Regulation (GSR) will be implemented, which calls for the incorporation of mandatory safety features in new vehicle approvals. These functions aim, broadly speaking, to keep drivers alert and prevent human error. Of the 11 required safety features, the regulation will make eight of them mandatory from July 2024, which include:

➤ Blind spot indication: detects the presence of cyclists on the road.

➤ Fatigue warning safety systems: Analyses the driver’s condition and recommends breaks if necessary.

➤ Reverse vision and information system: Technology that informs the driver of objects and persons behind the truck.

➤ Tyre monitoring system: Notifies the driver if tyres lose pressure.

➤ Emergency brake light: A brake light system that alerts other drivers when the truck brakes.

➤ Speed governor: Warns if the speed limit is exceeded.

➤ Fitting of breathalysers in vehicles: A locking system will be installed if alcohol consumption by the driver is detected.

➤ Pre-start warning system: Alerts the driver to the presence of persons or other objects near the vehicle before moving.

By 2026 and 2029, three additional features will be required, including a driver inattention detection system and a redesign of cabs to improve visibility and reduce blind spots. Also in 2029, the installation of a black box that will record vehicle information in the event of an accident will be mandatory.

Emission reductions by 2024:

To achieve the goal of reducing pollutant emissions, the new regulation focuses on two key aspects: the use of more efficient engines and the promotion of alternative fuels.

The new regulation for trucks, especially regarding the safety of vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes, represents a significant step forward. These measures will contribute to reducing risks on the roads and safeguarding both truck drivers and other road users.

The three functions aimed at reducing the frequency of accidents in trucks are: improved forward vision and systems that provide information on starting and blind spots. The long-term objective is to achieve what is known as “vision zero” with the goal of eliminating fatalities and serious accidents on European roads completely by 2050.
