What is fading and why is it so dangerous in tankers?
Brake fading is one of the most critical problems in heavy transport safety. It occurs when the braking system loses efficiency due to overheating of the discs, pads or drums.
In tanker trucks, this risk is multiplied:
✔ They transport liquid loads with high centre of gravity and dynamic displacement.
✔ They travel long routes with steep descents or irregular traffic.
✔ Continuous use of the brake generates extreme temperatures that compromise the friction material.
▶ Result: spongy pedals or increasingly ineffective braking, with a real risk of serious accidents.
Why does fading occur in tankers?
Braking fade can be caused by:
1️⃣ Overheated brakes: constant use without breaks on long descents.
2️⃣ Inadequate friction materials: Poor quality or poorly specified pads or discs.
3️⃣ Poorly distributed load: Uneven weight distribution forces the system more on certain axles.
4️⃣ Poor maintenance: Old brake fluid or worn components.
In tankers, in addition, the surge effect of the liquid load can push the mass of the vehicle forward under braking, putting more strain on the braking system.
Tips
1. Brake assist with retarder or engine brake: Do not use the service brake alone. Activate the hydraulic or electric retarder or engine brake on long descents. These systems relieve the stress on the main brakes.
2. Control speed before the descent: Before starting down a steep section, reduce speed and select a lower gear. Never rely on the brake to ‘correct’ speed on the descent.
3. Approved brake pads and discs: Always use premium friction materials approved for heavy transport. Check thickness and wear before each demanding route.
4. Regular bleeding of the brake system: Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, lowering its boiling point. Schedule regular flushes and use fluids recommended for heavy loads.
5. Balanced load distribution: Especially in partial tanks, control filling to avoid sudden fluid shifts that can compromise vehicle control under braking.
6. Continuous training for drivers: 50% of avoiding accidents due to fading depends on the driver. Knowing how to use the engine brake correctly, manage gears and anticipate situations of overexertion is key.
At Fernández Aedo we are aware that preventing fading is an investment in safety and profitability. It is not just about brakes, but about protecting lives, goods and reputation.
