Hydrogen is becoming increasingly important as an energy source. This energy source is emerging as a promising alternative to traditional electric vehicles. Although it still has a long way to go, more and more manufacturers, such as Toyota, BMW, Hyundai and even smaller companies are exploring this option.

AVL, in particular, has developed an innovative combustion engine concept that addresses two main challenges associated with this type of engine. First, they have solved the problem of lean combustion mixture by using a port fuel injection system that introduces water into the engine’s air intake. This ensures efficient combustion and eliminates unwanted premature ignition.

In terms of performance, AVL has exceeded its own targets. Initially, they were aiming for a power output of 402 hp, but managed to achieve 410 hp, delivered at 3,000 rpm. In addition, they achieved the exact figure of 500 Nm of torque, which the 2.0-litre engine generates at 4,000 rpm.

This project is the result of a collaboration between AVL and HUMDA and is primarily geared towards racing, following Toyota’s lead with a similar engine. After numerous simulations and tests with the real engine, the next step will be to install the engine in a vehicle and take it to a racetrack to assess the feasibility of this technology.
