The cleaning of ADR tanker tanks is a critical operation in the transport of dangerous goods. This process not only ensures the safety of the next product to be transported, but is also essential to comply with regulations and avoid environmental and health risks. The process and importance of tank cleaning is detailed below.

➔ Tank cleaning process

1.Degassing: Before cleaning, degassing is carried out to remove any residual gas present in the tank. This is to prevent explosions or inhalation of toxic vapours.

2. Waste drainage: All liquid waste is drained from the tank. This step is essential to ensure that no significant residue remains that could interfere with cleaning.

3. Initial Rinse: The tank is rinsed with water or a suitable solvent to remove surface residues. This initial rinse helps to loosen any adhering material.

4. Application of cleaning agents: Specific cleaning agents are used, depending on the type of chemical previously transported. These may include detergents, degreasers or specialised products for corrosive chemicals.

5. High pressure washing: The inside of the tank is washed with high pressure water or cleaning solutions under pressure to ensure that all internal surfaces are thoroughly cleaned.

6. Final rinse: A final rinse is carried out with clean water to remove any residue of the cleaning agents used.

7. Visual inspection and testing: After cleaning, a visual inspection of the inside of the tank is performed to ensure that it is completely clean. In some cases, additional tests, such as residue analysis, may be performed to verify cleanliness.

8. Drying: The tank is thoroughly dried to prevent the formation of rust and to ensure that it is ready for the next charge.

9. Documentation: The entire cleaning process is recorded, including the agents used and the results of inspections. This documentation is crucial for regulatory compliance and traceability.

➔ Special considerations

  • Types of products transported: Some products require more complex cleaning procedures. For example, corrosive products may leave residues that require specific cleaning agents.

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE): Clean-up personnel should wear appropriate PPE to protect themselves from chemicals and residues.

  • Waste management systems: Cleaning waste must be managed in accordance with environmental regulations. This includes the collection, treatment and proper disposal of liquid and solid waste.
