Spain is making progress in the modernisation of the Atlantic and Mediterranean Corridors, with a clear commitment by the Ministry of Transport to boost economic development, European integration and the decarbonisation of transport.

With the goal of investing up to 27 billion euros for the deployment and improvement of these corridors until 2030, the focus has been on allocating more than 3 million euros in this year’s General State Budget for the expansion and improvement of the trans-European corridors.

Within the framework of the Global Mobility Call 2023, emphasis was placed on the 360º Atlantic and Mediterranean Corridor. During this meeting, the Secretary of State for Transport, David Lucas, highlighted the strategic importance of these corridors for Spain’s economic and social growth, as well as for the reduction of emissions in transport. He also emphasised their fundamental role in strengthening European integration, boosting trade and tourism, and promoting regional cohesion in the European Union.

On the other hand, the government recognises the need for the active participation of the private sector to drive these corridors, as they will be the ones in charge of operating them. In this regard, the Secretary of State underlined the essential improvement of mobile infrastructure and nodal structures, as well as a change of mindset among key players in the sector. He stressed the importance of collaboration of all stakeholders and pointed out that infrastructure investments, support programmes and funding mechanisms at national and European level are crucial but not sufficient for the success of these corridors.

The Atlantic Corridor, a multimodal network connecting several European nations such as Portugal, Spain, France, Germany and Ireland, is an extensive rail route that crosses eleven Autonomous Communities in Spain. The Ministry has allocated an investment of 1,648 million euros in the 2023 General State Budget to extend and complete the Atlantic Railway Axis.

In parallel, the Mediterranean Corridor is presented as a strategic project for Spain’s connections with Europe, connecting several Spanish regions with Europe at standard gauge. To promote this key infrastructure, 1,695 million euros have been allocated in the 2023 Budget to finance railway actions in this corridor.
